Home of "The Famous 4th Avenue Cookie!"
The Famous 4th Avenue Cookie is an oatmeal chocolate chip cookie with a recipe developed by my mom, JoAnn Reshetar. The recipe has been adapted over the years but the original recipe began taking shape when she was in high school, living in her parents’ house on 4th Avenue in Austin, MN. I spent a lot of time in that house while growing up, as we all spent a lot of time with our grandparents (both sets of grandparents lived in Austin, MN so we were lucky that we grew up 30 minutes from them!). The house is, in fact, the exact location of the event which inspired the name of my company (more on that later).
The Famous 4th Avenue Cookie is known by many and is regularly sought after. A childhood friend of mine has said that to this day, it remains the best chocolate chip cookie she's ever had, while others have said they want to take it to a lab to have it analyzed to see what's in it!
How Did I Come Up With The Name?
When I was young (probably around 5-8 yrs old) I was playing a game of Memory with my Grandma Wood. I remember we were sitting on the floor and I was winning the game. Now, young me wanted a cookie (naturally). I didn't want her to say no (as in "you've already had two", or "it's too close to suppertime") so I thought I would be "sneaky" about it. I said "how about whoever wins gets a cookie." I remember my grandma laughing and laughing, as she knew what I was trying to do. I can't tell you who actually won the game but I'm pretty sure I got a cookie anyway. ;-)
I always had to be careful, though, when reaching for a cookie out of her shallow round yellow tupperware container. She made the same recipe with chocolate chips as she did with raisins. There's nothing worse than thinking you're biting into a chocolate chip cookie when you actually bite into a raisin one instead. I didn't like the raisin ones, but they were my Grandpa Wood's favorite cookie and he always found our reactions funny when we'd accidentally choose the wrong kind. Those raisins were deceiving - all chocolatey-looking as they lurked just beneath the surface of the cookie.
